Nikkiso’s LNG-to-power solution instrumental in providing emergency power to Puerto Rico’s electricity grid

Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gases Group was a key partner for New Fortress Energy as the LNG company sought a quick, effective and safe means to provide reliable power to Puerto Rico in response to FEMA’s request for temporary power.
New Fortress Energy developed and deployed a 150MW temporary power plant which provides natural gas-fueled power to the archipelago when it needs it most. The emergency installation was commissioned in Palo Seco, just 82 days after an unprecedented demand caused by dangerous, record-breaking temperatures in 2023.
To support its customer’s –and Puerto Rico’s citizens’ – need for a fast solution to its energy crisis, Nikkiso provided a modular, standardized equipment designed for fast and easy deployment. The infrastructure provided included high pressure regasification equipment and as the terminal is supplied by natural gas from New Fortress Energy’s San Juan terminal via trucks, Nikkiso also provided the trailer offloading pump skids, interconnected piping and the associated control system to run the equipment.
Chris Colizzi, President of Nikkiso’s Heat Exchangers division, said the project illustrated the Group’s capabilities in end-to-end LNG system design.
“We were honored that in a time of crisis and need for a fast and reliable solution, we were able to partner with New Fortress Energy to bring a solution to Puerto Rico,” he said.
“The work we did in Puerto Rico shows exactly what we can do as an original equipment manufacturer, ensuring seamless operation thanks to our work in the design, engineering, manufacturing, and integration of critical system components.”
Nikkiso’s power generation systems offer comprehensive solutions, ranging from original equipment manufacturer bundles to turnkey packages, tailored to accommodate all regasification capacities and pressure requirements.
